Non-Traditional Shepard's Pie

So we all know Shepard's pie right? With its mashed potatoes and delicious meats all layered in a casserole dish? Not sure the origins of this go to comfort food and I wont bore you with the details either. Nor will I make you scroll 16 pages just to get to the recipe. So here it goes. My version of a Shepard's Pie with pictures. Also I took this off a recipe by Rachel Ray but made it my own so kudos to her but also me for making it my own...

Side note: You can add as much as you want or as little as you want for each of these ingredients if you prefer more garlic add more. Make it your own :) Also I'm not a professional just a girl trying to make good food so everything isn't exact. Like I said I made it my own. (insert shoulder shrug)

Step 1: Ingredients

Get all your ingredients out before hand because you will forget something. Like I did.

2 lbs Ground Chicken (or Ground Turkey/Ground Beef, if you are using turkey use dark meat or a mix of dark and white also the same with the chicken this will cause it to be less dry)

1 small Onion chopped

3 cloves Garlic

1 tbsp Butter

Seasoning (Adobo)

2 tbsp Worcester

2 tbsp Flour

1 cup Chicken stock (beef broth if using beef)

3-4 large Potatoes (not pictured)

Sour cream (not pictured)

Shredded Cheddar Cheese (not pictured)

Peas/carrots (optional)

Step 2: Onions and Garlic

Place oil, onion and garlic in pan and cook on low heat for a few minutes.

Add Chicken/Seasoning and cook until brown. You may need to drain the chicken if there is too much water and oil in there.

Step 3: Gravy

While the chicken cooks, start making the gravy.

Add butter to small pot

Add flour

Add Worcester

Add chicken stock and whisk until all lumps are out. You can add more flour or stock depending on how thick you want it

Step 4: The chicken mixture

Add gravy to chicken and add frozen peas. Remember that the peas will emit water and make the gravy watery.

Cover and cook for 20 minutes

Step 5: Potatoes

You can use the frozen potatoes that microwave in the bag and all you need is to pour them in a bowl and mash. BUT why take the easy way when you can peel and cut potatoes.

I cooked them in my instant pot for 14 mins, HIGH pressure, SLOW Release. with about 1 1/2 cup of water on the bottom.

Mash them with the sour cream and shredded mozzarella cheese and a little bit of water, the sour cream makes it super creamy. Add salt and pepper.

Step 6: Layer

Now the final steps of putting all this together, Finally the end.

Place chicken mixture in casserole dish, layer mashed potatoes on top, then layer with shredded cheese.

Bake in oven for 15 minutes at 350. Or broil until cheese is melted. Serve right away!
